Tally vs Zoho Books for a growing Indian business — an honest comparison.

We get this question constantly. You're using Tally, you're hitting its limits, and someone told you Zoho Books is better. Or you're on Zoho Books and your CA keeps asking for Tally exports. Here's the honest answer — which isn't the same for every business.

Where Tally wins, clearly

  • CA and accountant familiarity: 90% of Indian CAs know Tally deeply. If your CA drives your accounting, this matters more than any feature comparison.
  • Offline first: Tally works without internet. If your operations are in areas with unreliable connectivity, this is decisive.
  • Manufacturing and inventory: TallyPrime's Bill of Materials, job costing, and multi-location inventory are genuinely strong. Zoho Books lags here.
  • Statutory compliance: Tally has been handling Indian GST, TDS, and payroll for decades. The statutory formats are deep and well-tested.
  • One-time cost: TallyPrime is a perpetual license. Zoho Books is a subscription. Over 5 years, Tally is usually cheaper.

Where Zoho Books wins, clearly

  • Cloud-native: accessible from anywhere, any device, without a server or VPN. For a founder who travels, this matters.
  • Integrations: Zoho Books plugs into Razorpay, Stripe, Shopify, and the rest of the Zoho ecosystem natively.
  • User interface: Zoho Books is significantly easier to use for non-accountants. Your operations team can raise POs and invoices without training.
  • Automation: recurring invoices, payment reminders, and approval workflows are built in.
  • Multi-currency and international: if you invoice clients abroad, Zoho handles this far more cleanly.

The honest recommendation

Stay on Tally if: you're manufacturing, trading, or distribution-heavy; your CA is embedded in your Tally data; you need offline access; or your team is not tech-savvy.

Switch to Zoho Books if: you're a service business or agency; you need your team to self-serve invoicing and approvals without an accountant; you're growing internationally; or you want native integrations with payment gateways and CRMs.

Here's what most people don't tell you: the tool matters less than the layer above it. We've built dashboards and automation on top of both Tally and Zoho Books. The underlying accounting software is rarely the bottleneck — the lack of real-time visibility and connected workflows is.

If you're asking this question, you probably don't need to switch tools — you need to connect the tool you have to the rest of your business. That's a different problem, and a cheaper one to solve.
